After tonight the Mariners girls’ hockey team will have only five regular season games left to play. It’s amazing how fast a season seems to fly by.

Tonight they host Moose Lake and Tuesday they host Eveleth-Gilbert. Chisago Lakes has wrapped up the No. 1 seed for section 7A. The No. 2 seed comes down to Hibbing and Silver Bay. If the Mariners sweep the remaining section games on their schedule, it’s theirs. Otherwise, it will go to Hibbing. The girls were 10-8 after the Lake of the Woods games.

Marina Carter became the seventh Mariner girl to attain the 100-point mark in career scoring during the Schwan Cup. She is currently at 109 points and fourth overall with 71 goals. Taylor Guzzo is currently at 145 points. Carter is now also second all-time in penalties and penalty minutes.

Boys’ hockey

The boys host Bagley/Fosstom tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in a rematch. The Mariners lost 7-4 in the first contest after leading 4-2. Thursday the boys are at Ely for their 16th game of the season. They were 8-5 following the Greenway game.

Girls’ basketball

Following the holiday season, the Mariner girls’ basketball team had the top teams such as Hopkins, Fergus Falls, Providence Academy, and Maranatha Academy. Esko at fifth in AA, Mountain Iron-Buhl at fifth in A and North Woods at seven in A were the only local teams receiving votes. For the boys it was Eastview, Benilde/St.Margaret’s, Braham, and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on the top. Grand Rapids came in at third in AAA and Lakeview Christian Academy was seventh in A.

Following the holiday season, the Mariner boys’ basketball team had everybody back for the first time this season.

Other rankings

Girls hockey returned with Benilde/St.Margaret’s and Breck at the top. No locals were ranked in AA. Hibbing came in at 19 and Proctor/Hermantown at 20 in A. Breck remains the only unbeaten team and Windom and Lake of the Woods are the only winless teams.

Boys hockey returned with Duluth East and Breck at the top. Grand Rapids was 14 in AA and Hermantown 3, Duluth Marshall 5, Duluth Denfeld 12, and Hibbing 17 in A. East, Breck, and Hermantown are the remaining unbeaten teams with St.Paul Highland Park and Wadena/Deer Creek the winless teams.

Section 7AA remains with East as the favorite with Grand Rapids and Elk River the top challengers. Section 7A has a top five set of teams and a bottom five set of teams. The top five, in no particular order are Marshall, Denfeld, Hibbing, International Falls, and Virginia. The bottom five are Ely, Eveleth, Greenway, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors. There is nothing written in stone in either half as it is an order far from decided yet.
