The Mariners girls’ hockey team made their annual pilgrimage to Blaine last week to play in the top division of the Schwan Cup.

After losing their opening game 6-5 in overtime to the Hutchinson Tigers, they fell 2-1 to Rochester Mayo in the consolation semis. They finished up with a 3-1 victory over Eveleth-Gilbert.

Sara Carlson, who is headed for New Hampshire next season to play Division I hockey, scored four goals for the Tigers including the game winner unassisted in overtime. The Mariners led 2-1 after goals from Rebecca Dilley and Taylor Guzzo and it was 2-2 after two. After the Tigers went ahead 5-2 at 8:59 of the third, the Mariners came storming back to put the game into overtime. Katelyn DeRoiser and Anna Carman got things started by scoring goals nine seconds apart to make it 5-4. With 5:45 left to play, Tori Stevens tied it up for the Mariners to complete the comeback. Cassie Swanson took the loss in the Mariner nets.

Game two saw Beth Gibson of Mayo and Guzzo trade second period goals to make it 1-1 after two periods of play. Sara Brakke scored what proved to be the game winner with 5:03 left to play. Phoenix Lillis took the loss for the Mariners in the nets.

The final day of action saw the Mariners paced by a hat trick from Marina Carter. She scored a power play goal and shorthanded goal in the first period and scored again in the third period after Maari Benda had put the Golden Bears on the board. Swanson was the Mariners’ winning goalie.
