The Mariners boys’ hockey team played only one section in 2011. They open 2012 with four straight section opponents. They played Lake County rival Two Harbors and Ely earlier this week. Tomorrow they host Greenway and Thursday they are at Eveleth.

The girls are at Baudette tonight and tomorrow for two contests with Lake of the Woods. Tuesday they are at Proctor to play the Proctor/Hermantown Mirage. Entering 2012 the boys were 6-4 and the girls were at 8-8.

Friendly competition

The annual Mariner alumni hockey game was held last Saturday with the young team coming out ahead by a score of 8-6. The young team had graduates from 2005-2011 and the old team had graduates from 1980-2004. Jesse Downey and Sean Graden each had two goals for the winners.

The 2011 Silver Bay Blue Line Club/AmericInn holiday hockey tournament had Robbinsdale finish on top. They were followed by Legacy Christian, Bagley, Silver Bay, Moose Lake, and Ely. Here’s my all-tournament team. As goalie I have freshman goaltender Angel Hillstrom of Cooper who won all three of her team’s games. At defense I have Sam Morgen of Cooper and Nathan Bloyer of Legacy. As forwards I have Josh Cisar of Moose Lake who led the tourney with 14 points and Cole Gubrud of Bagley who led with nine goals. The other forward is Mariner Shane Billings who had a number of clutch goals for Silver Bay. Honorable mention goes to Tyler Cisar of Moose Lake and Aaron Leintz of Bagley.

Statewide

Breck remains the only unbeaten girls’ team following holiday tournament action. The team won the blue division of the Schwan Cup, the same division the Mariners were in. There are still four unbeaten boys’ teams in Breck, Duluth East, Hermantown, and Maple Grove. Duluth East won the gold division of the Schwan Cup, Breck won the silver division, Maple Grove won the St. Louis Park tournament, and Hermantown was unbeaten in three games at Thief River Falls. Duluth East and Maple Grove were scheduled to meet on Wednesday.

Basketball update

Both basketball teams returned to action at Ely Tuesday and host Moose Lake tonight.
