Clair Nelson Vocational Scholarship available for Lake Co. students

By: News-Chronicle, Lake County News Chronicle

Lake Superior School District students can soon apply for the Clair Nelson Vocational Scholarship.

Each year four scholarships of $250 are awarded to students interested in pursuing a career in a vocational or technical field. Vocational career fields are usually considered to be those requiring two or fewer years of post-secondary education or training.

Clair Nelson Vocational Scholarships honor the late Clair Nelson. Nelson served in the U.S. Marine Corps, managed his own trucking business, and was a founding member of the North Shore Trade and Tech Project. Area residents may also remember Nelson as a Lake County commissioner— a position he held for nine years. Clair was a lifelong advocate for education and an energetic supporter of the vocational and technical trades.

Applications are being accepted Jan. 1 to March 1. Applications are available through the guidance offices at the high schools in Two Harbors and Silver Bay, the Two Harbors and Silver Bay service centers, or online at www.friendsofthefinlandcommunity.org.

Since beginning in 2007, 18 individuals and their communities have benefitted from Clair Nelson scholarship funds. Recent awards were given to the following Chrisstie Flanigan of Two Harbors for management, Annelyse Harrison of Silver Bay for nursing, and Allison Oja of Finland for nursing.

Those who would like to donate to the Clair Nelson scholarship fund can make a tax-deductible donation by sending a check payable to the Friends of the Finland Community with memo Claire Nelson Scholarship Fund. Checks can be sent to P.O. Box 582, Finland, MN 55603.
