The Mariners girls’ hockey team split a pair of contests last week to move their record to 7-5.
They won 7-4 over the Rebels at Moose Lake last Thursday and lost 4-3 in overtime at home to the Hayward Hurricanes, the number one team in Wisconsin, last Saturday.
At Moose Lake, the Mariners put the game in running time early in the final period before the Rebels scored three late goals. Marina Carter had a hat trick and an assist to lead the Mariners offensively. Her third goal of the game put the Mariners up 4-0. Kristiina Thums, Anna Carman, and Rachel Dilley also scored goals to give the Mariners a 6-1 lead after two periods of play with Erin Mollberg scoring for the Rebels. After Rebecca Dilley put the game in running time, Andrea Youngberg, Maggie Unzen, and Mollberg scored for the Rebels to make the final score 7-4. Cassie Swanson picked up the win in the Mariner nets with 11 saves in 39 minutes of play and Sara Carman added five more to finish up for the Mariners. Kaitlyn Greene had 29 stops in the Rebel nets.
The game with Hayward was an old-fashioned barn burner with great back and forth action, despite a 45-23 shot advantage for the Hurricanes.
Kelly Ahlgren put the Hurricanes on the board first and Carter replied for the Mariners as they traded unassisted goals to make it 1-1 after one. Taylor Guzzo gave the Mariners their only lead of the game at 2:47 of the second with assists from Carter and Shay Viola. Hallee Jorgenson tied it up for Hayward just over a minute later and it was 2-2 after two periods. The final period saw Hayward retake the lead with a power play goal from Alyssabeth Tremblay at 4:18, only to see the Mariners reply with a power play goal from Guzzo set up by Viola and Rebecca Dilley with 2:19 left in regulation play. Ahlgren ended things with a power play goal for the Hurricanes with 1:21 left in the extra period of play. Phoenix Lillis finished with 41 stops in the Mariner nets, including 10 in the overtime period. Noel Weber and Sarah Miley combined for 20 saves for the Hurricanes.
The Mariner girls played Cloquet last night. Results of that game were not available at press time. They’ll next play in the Schwan Cup tournament Dec. 28-30.
