The Mariner girls’ hockey team ran their winning streak up to five games with two home victories over Wisconsin opponents.
Their winning streak continued last Thursday when they overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Superior Spartans 5-2. Marina Carter, with a hat trick, led the way against the Spartans. She scored the game’s first goal late in the first period and scored the game winning goal late in the second period. She scored an empty-net goal late in period three to clinch the win.
Anna Carman scored the other two goals to go with three assists from Taylor Guzzo and two from Shay Viola.
Kelsey Hansen and Kailey Buhr scored for the Spartans. Phoenix Lillis stopped 28 Spartan shots to pick up her first varsity victory. Sarah Runser had 26 stops for the Spartans.
The next evening, the Mariners scored five times in the first period on their way to a 10-3 win over the Webster/Grantsburg Blizzard.
Carman and Guzzo each scored five goals against the Blizzard to set a new Mariner mark for goals in a game. Two goals by Guzzo and one by Carman, 38 seconds apart in the opening period, set a new Mariner mark for the fastest three goals. The Mariners added four goals in the second period. Cassie Swanson had 16 saves to pick up the victory with 8th-grader Sara Carman getting four saves in her varsity debut.
Kassie Lien had a goal and an assist for the Blizzard and Wendy Roberts and Paige Young had their other goals. Hope Tucker finished with 20 saves for the Blizzard.
The Mariners are at home tomorrow with a 4 p.m. game against Chisago Lakes. After that, they’ll travel to Moose Lake/Willow River Dec. 15.
