The Mariners opened their 2011-12 hockey season with an 11-5 home victory over the Ashland Oredockers Monday.
After trailing by scores of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2, the Mariners scored two short-handed goals to take a 4-3 lead after two. Five unanswered goals in the first 6:49 of the final period put the game in running time. After a lackluster first period, the Mariners rallied and outshot the Oredockers 25-4 in the second period. They finished the game with a shot advantage of 59-13.
Cassie Swanson picked up the victory with six saves. Phoenix Lillis finished up with two more saves. Lauren Tremblay had 48 stops for Ashland. Marina Carter and Taylor Guzzo each led the Mariners offensively with two goals and two assists. Madeline Spangenberg and Harley Kinney each had three points for the Oredockers. Shay Viola added two goals and an assist for the Mariners and Anna Carman scored twice. Allison Morris, Kristiina Thums, and Rachel Dilley had the other Mariner goals. The Mariners play at 7:30 p.m. in International Falls today and host Orono at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
