At least two people were killed Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle collision north of Two Harbors.
According to preliminary reports, a pickup truck northbound on Minnesota Highway 61 lost control on the Gooseberry River bridge and went into the southbound lane, where it was broadsided on the passenger side by a southbound Jeep, Minnesota State Patrol Sgt. Mark Baker said. At least one of the vehicles caught fire.
There was at least one other person in one of the vehicles, according to the state patrol dispatch in Duluth. That person’s condition was not immediately available.
The accident happened around 6 a.m. Roads in the area were slippery from a mixture of rain and snow and, in some locations ice, Baker said.
Traffic was detoured around the accident scene for several hours. Highway 61 was reopened to traffic before 11 a.m. Tuesday.
This is the fourth fatal car crash in Lake County since October. On Oct. 1, a woman was killed after a head-on collision with a semi truck on Highway 61 near Split Rock Lighthouse. About a week later, a Little Falls, Minn. man was killed in a rollover crash on Drummond Grade Road north of the Two Harbors airport. And an Isabella man was killed Nov. 6 in a rollover accident on Minnesota Highway 1.
