Bayside Chatter... Mariner beats rushing record

The Mariners are at McGregor tonite to play the Mercuries for the championship of section five.The Mercuries come into the game at 9-1 with their only loss coming to Onamia by a score of 41-26.They are led by senior running back Alex Carlstrom who has rushed for over 1,500 yards this season and scored three times vs Cromwell in the section semis.The winner of this game advances to the state tournament and will play the section 8 champion in a quarterfinal contest.The game will be at Concordia College in Moorhead at 1pm on Saturday,November 12.The section 8 finalists were Kittson County Central and Goodridge/Grygla-Gatzke.

Holden Panetti set a new Mariner single season rushing record of 1,765 yards versus Floodwood.The old mark of 1,707 yards was set by coach Jamie Otterblad in 1999.Jordan Fralich became the fourth Mariner to score five touchdowns in a game when he did so against Wrenshall.Previously Brad Johnson did it in 1981 against Eveleth,Mike Frericks in 1975 vs Hermantown and Jamie Otterblad in 1999 against Duluth Marshall.Otterblad also has six games with 4 touchdowns and nine with 3 and has the all time rushing mark of 4,318 yards.

This is the sixth section title game for the Mariners in football.In 1984 they won the section 7B title and in 1988 they won the 7C title.In 1998,1999 and 2002 they fell to Cook County in 7A championship games.They went to state in 1978 in class A before the section playoffs had begun.

Mariners volleyball

The volleyball team’s season ended with a 25-19,25-13 & 25-16 loss to Cook County in the section 7A quarterfinals at Hermantown.Earlier they had traveled to Cromwell and come ahead by a score of 25-23,25-20,20-25 & 25-16.At Cromwell Marina Carter had 11 kills and 6 blocks and Alicia Nopola had 18 kills and 3 blocks.Shay  Viola had 5 kills and 6 digs vs Cook County.

Mariners hockey

The ice is in at the rink and the Mariners girls were able to start practicing with their coaches on Halloween.Their first game is scheduled for November 12 at home versus Ashland at 2pm.Mike Guzzo returns as head coach with assistants Bruce Carman and Ron Rykken.Also helping out this season is Katherine Chute,the 2007 Ms Hockey winner with Blake who went on to Harvard.

There are currently  six former Mariners playing post high school hockey.Jayce Paulseth is with the Fresno Monsters of the NAHL,Sean Graden is with the Hudson Crusaders of the MNJHL and Neill Kelley is with the Duluth Clydesdales of the SIJHL.Playing college hockey are Sam Downey a junior with the Minnesota Gophers,Biz Huss a junior with Bethel and Taylor Skelton a freshman with Gustavus Adolphus.
