Two Harbors broke a winless streak at the right time with a 15-7 win over Duluth Marshall last Wednesday. It propelled the team to a home Section 7AA playoff game Tuesday, an easy 48-14 win over Eveleth-Gilbert. The Agates travel to Hinckley-Finlayson in Hinckley Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
After a scoreless first half and third quarter in the regular season final , the Agates “woke-up” in the fourth quarter to score 15 points and move the ball more effectively , coach Tom Nelson said.
Cole Myrdal led the Agates ground game as he rushed for over 114 yards on 27 carries and scored two touchdowns. Sophomore Mike Nordean added 63 yards rushing on 11 carries and ran in a two-point conversion after the first Two Harbors touchdown.
Defensively, freshman linebacker Lucas Kempffer had eight tackles and senior defensive lineman Billy Sell had six tackles. Senior linebacker Micky Smith, junior linebacker Austyn Wasko, sophomore Mike Nordean, and sophomore defensive lineman Mark Pearson contributed five tackles each. Senior defensive lineman Noah Alm forced two Duluth Marshall fumbles in the fourth quarter that were recovered by the Agates.
The Agates amped up the running game Tuesday against Eveleth-Gilbert.
“The kids played a good game against Eveleth-Gilbert,” Nelson said. “The first quarter we started out a little slow but then came alive in the second quarter.”
It was a big game for Myrdal. He had 22 carries for 193 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Agate offense. His rushing yardage in the game put him over the 1,000 yards rushing mark for the season. “(Reaching 1,000 yards) is great accomplishment for (Myrdal) as well as his teammates that have blocked for him all season,” Nelson said.
The Agates face Hinckley-Finlayson in the semifinals of the Section 7AA playoffs at 2 p.m tomorrow. A fan bus from the high school loads at 11:15 a.m. and leaves at 11:30 a.m. The bus will return to Two Harbors around 7 p.m. Any fans interested in taking the bus can sign up in the high school office.
