Homecoming spirit wasn’t enough to keep the Agate football team from losing 38-20 to Deer River Saturday.
Two Harbors moved to 2-3 on the year. “I thought we played with more emotion against Deer River, not as much as I ultimately like to see, but it was better,” coach Tom Nelson said.
But emotion wasn’t enough to keep the Agates from turning the ball over. “We turned the ball over too many times. Once is too much, let alone four times,” Nelson said.
The first quarter of the game was scoreless. In the second quarter, Deer River scored 18 unanswered points.
The third quarter put Two Harbors on the scoreboard with six points, while Deer River scored 14. The fourth quarter brought Two Harbors the most points – they scored 14. However, it wasn’t enough to top Deer River, who scored six points in the fourth to end with a score of 38.
Two Harbors seniors were the leaders of the game. Running back Cole Myrdal had 18 carries for 123 yards and one touchdown as well as two pass receptions for 31 yards. Senior running back Micky Smith and sophomore running back Nick Johnson also had touchdown runs for the Agates.
“We are really expecting quite a bit from our young kids, but they are accepting the challenge,” Nelson said.
The Agates hope to redeem themselves at tonight’s 7 p.m. game in Pine City. “I have to continue to work on teaching these boys that if we do our job the best we can, winning will come around more often,” Nelson said.
