The major fundraiser for the Two Harbors Public Library is approaching, and organizers are looking for the community’s help.
The annual Friends of the Two Harbors Library Friday-Saturday book sale will go from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 16 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Two Harbors Community Center. The organization is still accepting donations for the sale and will take in useable books, movies, CDs, and other media until Sept. 15. Donations can be dropped off at the library.
The book sale is the library’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Last year, the sale brought in more than $2,000 for the library. That money is used on things such as subscription services and reading programs, and any other items the library asks the Friends of the Library to fund. “It helps cover things that would normally not fit into the budget,” Jan O’Donnel said, a Friends of the Library member and volunteer. “It makes a big difference to the services (the library) provides to the community and what’s on the shelf.”
The organization is hoping to meet or exceed the fundraising total from last year, and with a lot of bargain-priced books, O’Donnel is confident that the sale will do well. Except for specialty items such as vintage books or collectable first-edition books, hardcover books are priced at $1 and paperbacks are 50 cents. Movies and other media are priced at 50 cents to $1. And if those prices aren’t low enough, bargain hunters can get a bag of books for $3 starting Saturday at noon. “It’s all about supporting the library and getting people reading,” O’Donnel said.
For those who don’t have books to donate but still want to help with the sale, the organization is still looking for volunteers. Call 834-2539 for information. The Two Harbors High School National Honor Society is helping with setup and cleanup for the sale.
