Library news: Award-winning author to visit Two Harbors

Joy Lintelman, a professor of history at Concordia College and Minnesota Book Award winner, will be at the Two Harbors Library.

Joy Lintelman, a professor of history at Concordia College and Minnesota Book Award winner, will be at the Two Harbors Library at 6:00 p.m. Aug. 3 to speak about her new book, “I Go to America: Swedish American Women and the Life of Mina Anderson.”

Lintelman writes about the lives of thousands of young, single women who immigrated to America from 1881 to 1920. She discovered Mina Anderson’s memoir while doing research in Sweden. She learned that a Swedish novelist had asked Anderson to write down her life story so he could use the material in one of his novels.

Lintelman says Anderson wrote a lively, intimate memoir about her immigrant experiences. She traces Anderson’s trip across the Atlantic to Wisconsin and then to the Twin Cities area, where she worked as a domestic servant. She eventually married and, with her husband, worked a farm, raised seven children, and contributed to rural Swedish community life in Minnesota.

The story is told in her own words, accompanied by Lintelman’s thoughtful and carefully researched text of how immigrant women became Americans.

The local Vasa chapter will serve refreshments. The visit is sponsored by the Two Harbors Friends of the Library and made possible by a Minnesota Books Awards Grant.
