Local athletes finish year with top honors

Ryan Deshaw, a recent Mariner graduate, capped off a great senior season by playing in the Arrowhead All Star baseball game in Nashwauk. He was one of seven Polar League players on the South roster that lost 8-2 to the North team.

Taylor Guzzo, a junior infielder and pitcher last season for the Mariners, was named to the Duluth News Tribune All Area softball team. Sophomore Katie Thun, a pitcher for Hermantown, was named Player of the Year. Her father, Brian Thun, is a former Mariner.

Deven VanHouse of Silver Bay is second place in the point standings for the Midwest Modifieds division at both the Amsoil Speedway in Superior and the Proctor Speedway.

The cancellation of the Rocky Taconite softball tournament for the second year in a row pretty much means it is now dead and buried. It had a 38-year run and was one of the summer highlights in Silver Bay.
