After months of searching, the Two Harbors Public Library board has made its decision to hire a St. Cloud woman as the new library director.

The search committee chose Michele Monson of St. Cloud. Board members unanimously voted to accept the committee’s recommendation at a special meeting last Thursday.

Monson is the regional supervisor for the Great River Regional Library. She’s worked there since 2009 and is responsible for maintaining the library system’s budget, hiring and training staff, and coordinating programs – all administrative tasks that library board president Tony Lockhart said were exactly what the search committee was looking for.

She has a degree in art and classical civilization from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and is an American Library Association accredited master of library and information science from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul.

The library has been without a director since April 15, when Sue Heskin left to direct the Superior system. Library staff has been splitting administrative tasks in the interim.

“We have a terrific staff,” Lockhart said. “What’s nice about Michele is that she’ll add to that already existing good group.”

The search committee whittled down the number of applicants to three people. Pending a background check and accepting the position, Monson’s tentative start date would be August 1.
