The band plays on beginning next Thursday as the Two Harbors City band hosts its first concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. at Thomas Owens Park in the Paul Gauche Bandshell.
Concerts will be held every Thursday in the park and the nearby United Church will serve meals 5:30 to 7 p.m. Meals, which include side dishes and a beverage, will be $5. On the menu next week are hot dogs.
The Two Harbors City Band, organized in 1897, has the claim of the longest continuously functioning city band in the state. The concerts have been big attraction for tourists and residents of the area.
Large crowds have gathered to watch concerts at the band shell since its construction in 1937. Although it has served its purpose over the years, it is starting to show its age and needs to be repaired. A group has formed, including some members of band, called Friends of the Band Shell Park, to take on some of the issues with the band shell and the park. The vision for the band shell includes more rehearsal and storage space. The park is also in need of public restrooms and multi-use areas for year-round activities. There is even some thought of moving the band shell for better sight lines and more protection for performers from the winds off the lake.
Friends of the Band Shell Park is raising money through events and donations. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.friendsofthebandshellpark.com.
