New reporter welcomes your thoughts

I’m ready to hit the ground running here in Lake County and hope that the community will help me in doing so. I want to hear from you about the things that are affecting your lives.

By: By Brittany Berrens, Lake County News Chronicle

Hello readers.

I’d like to introduce myself as a new reporter for the Lake County News-Chronicle. My name is Brittany Berrens and I’ve recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a degree in journalism. I’m fresh off campus and excited to get to know the community.

I grew up in a small town near Green Bay called Chilton. The town is much like Two Harbors, though I suspect there are a greater number of Minnesota Vikings fans here. After graduating high school I decided to trade corn fields and dairy farms for thick forests and made the move up to northwestern Wisconsin. I quickly fell in love with the area’s friendly nature, hardworking people and, of course, Lake Superior.

My four years at UW-Superior gave me the chance to really explore the area through a number of reporting internships and jobs. I started out my journalism career working for the campus newspaper, and from there I launched myself into the world of news.

An internship reporting for the Superior bureau of Wisconsin Public Radio my sophomore year really solidified the fact that I loved getting out in the community, talking to all different kinds of people and telling stories that were informative and meaningful to peoples’ lives.

Eventually I started freelance reporting for the Cloquet Pine Journal and other publications around the Twin Ports. Not to limit myself to radio or print journalism, for the past year I’ve been the weekend producer at KQDS Fox 21 News. I wanted to make sure that my four years at UW-Superior were going to be worthwhile. Landing a reporting job with the News-Chronicle assures me that I did not waste my time in college and truly soaked up every experience I could.

I’m ready to hit the ground running here in Lake County and hope that the community will help me in doing so. I want to hear from you about the things that are affecting your lives.

Feel free to drop me an email, or call me at the office. While I can’t promise that every conversation will turn into a story in the newspaper, I’d love to hear from you. If you see me out and about working on a story, or even just buying groceries, introduce yourself. I want to be a community member that people can trust and aren’t afraid to approach with ideas and thoughts.

I’m not all work and no play. I love being outdoors, spending time on Lake Superior, writing, making pottery and listening to local music. If there are any groups in the area that are involved in the mentioned activities, I’d love to get involved. Again, drop me a line and we’ll take it from there.

I hope to meet many of you soon and look forward to bringing you the best in local news.
