Letter to the editor: Strange times in the old town

I would like to say “thank you” to the News-Chronicle and all its staff for presenting and representing a voice formerly unheard in this small town of ours: a voice of resistance and the ability to speak up to someone in power.

I would like to say “thank you” to the News-Chronicle and all its staff for presenting and representing a voice formerly unheard in this small town of ours: a voice of resistance and the ability to speak up to someone in power.

I have lived in this town 23 years. I graduated from the high school, paid taxes here, made my home here, and really used to love living in Two Harbors. Then something changed. I don’t know for sure what, when, nor how. People stopped saying hello, and holding doors open, and smiling at you on the streets. Something was dying here.

I think illegal actions in our local government should cause everyone in this entire county to sit up, take notice, and ask: “What?”

I, for one, would love $180,000 dollars to manage a golf course. How do I apply for that job?

I live off disability payments, about $9,000 a year. I have to pay for food, rent, medicines, and anything else I need with that money. I’d love to see the people in government try to live like I do for a year or two and see how well we start to budget, manage, and conserve public funds after that experience.

I am glad someone has finally shed some light on some of the things that go on behind closed doors in this city.

Regardless of the issue, we the people being governed have a right to full disclosure, any time of day or night and any place the bodies discuss the issues. Simply denying that fact, or sweeping over it, or occluding the truth shows that those who are in power should not be.

I think the new era of the Chronicle is doing one heck of a great job at not playing a popular role but an honest one. It is integrity, honor, and values that these very individuals were elected to serve for – not just their own personal agenda or ego.

I miss the old Two Harbors. I wish I could somehow bring it back.

It’s not just rose-colored glasses I am looking through. I yearn for that certain time.

Thank you, News-Chronicle, for pointing the moral compass in the correct direction again. Words do not express enough how this has gone on for too long with far too many issues.

From April Laakkonen, Two Harbors
