The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the city of Two Harbors will renovate the Lake Superior public water access on the east side of Agate Bay in Two Harbors this summer. The launch, including parking lots and pedestrian walking trails, will be closed from May 16 through October. Pedestrian access to the breakwater will reopen June 10.
There will be access to the Two Harbors Light Station and its bed and breakfast and museum operations.
The project includes construction of a new crib dock for wind protection, improved deep-water boat-launching ramps, a dedicated kayak ramp with dock, pedestrian walkways, and new parking lots.
While the ramp is under construction, boaters can access Lake Superior at the following launch sites:
- Two Harbors: Burlington Bay, temporary ramp, boats up to 20 feet, northeast side of city.
- Knife River Marina: Larger boats, seven miles southwest of Two Harbors.
- Twin Points Small Craft Harbor: Boats up to 20 feet, 15 miles northeast of Two Harbors.
- McQuade Small Craft Harbor: Larger boats, 16 miles southwest of Two Harbors.
- Silver Bay Marina: Larger boats, 25 miles northeast of Two Harbors.
Larry Killien, DNR harbor program coordinator, said he’s heard rumors of funding for the marina project coming from the Legislature.
“I can’t confirm or deny [that],” he said on whether there’s a strong chance of getting state money.
The Two Harbors City Council is working with legislators on a $12 million request for the marina on Agate Bay. The city will likely bond for another $12 million. The entire project is expected to cost $33 million.
The city already has $7 million authorized for the project. The council approved a resolution to request the other $12 million in the next bonding bill. Other funding would come from federal sources.
