Luke Thun contributed 11 points and Kyle Blood added two more as their Gold team defeated the Black team in the annual Polar League Conference All Star basketball game 93-92. Alicia Noploa of the Mariners played for the Gold team in the girl’s event who lost in overtime 72-70 to the Black.

Frozen Four

After three years in a row of teams from Boston winning the men’s Division I Frozen Four, the west eliminated any chances of that happening this year by eliminating the east from the event. Yesterday you had UMD vs. Notre dame and North Dakota vs. Michigan with the winners meeting tomorrow evening.

Girls hockey

Rebecca Dilley was selected to the Section 7 High Performance Team for the Spring Festival this weekend. Taylor Guzzo was named to the 17 team.

Football

Ely and Chisholm have each been placed in nine-man football for the next two seasons. Mesabi Academy is said to be planning on playing football again this season, which would affect the Mariners.

Softball

The race for the Polar League softball title this spring now appears to be wide open as it appears that a number of people are not returning to Barnum this season.

The Mariners first game of the season was cancelled Tuesday because of the weather. The team’s first game could have been played at home against Cromwell Thursday.

Great 8

Section 4 defeated Section 8, 4-3 in overtime to win the 2011 Great 8 tournament held annually for seniors. Section 7 finished fourth. Next up is the CCM Minnesota high school hockey National Invitational Tournament, which replaces the old Chicago Showcase, which Minnesota sent a team to.

This is the second year of this event and Minnesota will have two teams in the event, one picked from the Great 8 and one picked from the 18U High Performance Festival. Other teams in the event are North Dakota, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
