Letter to the editor: We need service
Thank you for the informative information about the proposed fiber network for Lake County.
Thank you for the informative information about the proposed fiber network for Lake County. We appreciate the extensive coverage about this. One thing in your column in the March 11 issue of the News-Chronicle really struck my attention: “Mediacom and others have simply said people don’t want or need better, faster service in the hinterlands.”
Actually they don’t want anyone except in a city. We live along Highway 61 about a third of a mile from the city limits of Beaver Bay, which I would not consider the hinterlands but neither Mediacom, Qwest, or anyone have been willing to provide service.
If it were not for Co-op Light & Power, we would be limited to dial-up. As it is, their system is a fixed system that is not available in all of the area. Also, it is limited to three megabytes, at best.
The Co-op seems a logical choice to work with as they have electrical service to a very large majority of the homes in the area. The project may need their poles in any case.
