Bayside Chatter: Mariner wins coach of the year

Ron Rykken, the Mariners assistant hockey coach from Babbitt, was named Section 7A Assistant Coach of the Year.  

National champion

Former Mariner Kyla Thorne and Rainy River Community College of International Falls won the women’s Division II club hockey national championship last weekend in Kalamazoo with an 8-1 victory over West Chester State.

It was the third national title for Rainy River in the past four years and they have been in the title game all four years. Thorne was named to the First Team All-Tournament Team at defense.

All-Conference

Biz Huss, also a former Mariner now with Bethel College, was named to the MIAC All-Conference hockey team. She finished second in scoring at Bethel with 30 points, via 15 goals and assists.
