Bayside Chatter: Mariners shine in college hockey

Bethel, with former Mariner Biz Huss, swept St. Catherine last weekend to move into fourth place in the MIAC with six conference games remaining. The top five teams in the MIAC make the playoffs. St. Scholastica, with Libby Guzzo, was swept by University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point last weekend in two one-goal games. The Saints must sweep St. Norbert this weekend and win at least one the following weekend versus Eau Claire to have any chance of making the playoffs.
Alumni game
On Saturday night it will be the Agates 30 and older alumni hosting their counterpart from Silver Bay at Lake County Arena at 7 p.m.
Girls hockey
The girls hosted International Falls in a first round Section 7A hockey game last night. The winner of that contest moves on to Cloquet Tuesday where they will face the defending champion and No. 1 seed Chisago Lakes at 6 p.m. The second section semifinal will immediately follow this one.
Taylor Skelton, Nikki Mealey, and Taylor Guzzo were selected to play in Stars of the North All Star hockey game held annually in Cloquet. It is possible someone else from the Bay could still be added as the rosters not finalized yet.
Basketball
The Mariners boys basketball team is on a late- season run with everybody back. They are fourth in the Polar League at 5-4 and 8-7 overall. They lost a tough one last week to second-place McGregor in double overtime. In conference statistics, Luke Thun is third in scoring, while Kyle Blood is sixth, and Ryan Blood is 17th. Thun leads the conference in assists and Kyle Blood is 10th. Thun is fourth in steals and Kyle Blood is 11th. In field goal percentage, Kyle Blood is first, Ryan Blood is 14th, and Thun was 16th. The Mariners team is second in field goal percentage. Free throw percentages has Thun 12th, Kyle Blood at No. 13, Baruch Fischer at No. 17, and Ryan Blood coming in 20th. In rebounding Ryan Blood is first and Fischer is 17th.
For the girls, Alicia Nopola in Polar Conference action is 19th in scoring, 19th in field goal percentage, seventh in free throw percentage, and fifth in rebounding. Also in rebounding, Allana Lampton is eighth while Leigh Lampton is 14th.
