I finally made it down to the new Amsoil Arena and saw No. 3 Duluth East defeat No. 1 Eden Prairie 4-3 in overtime. It’s a very nice place with a great scoreboard. I sat in a different seat for each period and had a great view each time. It’s also a very easy rink to figure out.
College hockey
Rainy River Community College is 8-1-1 so far this season in women’s club hockey. Kyla Thorne of Silver Bay has three goals and six assists in nine games. Rainy River is ranked No. 1 by a good margin in the ACHA Division II western hockey rankings. The top three teams in both the west and east advance to the national championships to be held March 10-13 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Libby Guzzo had a goal and two assists as St. Scholastica swept Marian College last weekend. This weekend they are at undefeated and No. 2 in the nation University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
Rivalry
Silver Bay and Two Harbors take to the ice to face one another in the rematch tomorrow night at Rukavina Arena. The first meeting, at Lake County Arena, saw the Mariners eke out a 4-3 victory in overtime. Get there early if you want a good seat. Game-time is 7 p.m., not 7:30 p.m. The Mariners and Agates will also take to the ice to face each on Feb. 12 at Lake County Arena. Only this time it will be the thirty and over alumni facing each other. The game is part of the Two Harbors Winter Frolic celebration.
Girls hockey
After 18 games the girls hockey team stands with a record of 9-6-3. They play the Broncos at International Falls tonight in a rematch. The first game in Silver Bay finished in a 1-1 tie. The Mariners have another rematch on Tuesday when they travel to Hibbing to take on the Bluejackets. The Mariners won the first game 4-2.
Undefeated
There remains one undefeated high school hockey team remaining and it is the Hermantown Hawks. Bemidji, Little Falls, Minneapolis, New Ulm, and Totino-Grace all have only one loss. St. Paul Highland Park and Worthington are winless. For the girls Minnetonka has one loss and Lake of the Woods is winless.
