Two people were killed in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday morning north of Two Harbors.
A Chevy S10 pickup northbound on Minnesota Highway 61 lost control on the Gooseberry River bridge and went into the southbound lane, where it was broadsided on the passenger side by a southbound Jeep Liberty, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Both vehicles burned after the crash, State Patrol Sgt. Mark Baker said. In
addition to the two people killed, a person in the Jeep suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Baker said.
The accident happened about 6 a.m. Roads in the area were slippery from a mixture of rain and snow, and the bridge deck was ice covered.
Traffic was detoured around the accident scene for several hours Tuesday. Highway 61 was reopened to traffic before 11 a.m.
The names of the victims are expected to be released today.
