Guest Commentary: Plenty to buy right on North Shore

It’s been eight years since my family and I moved up to the Two Harbors area from the Twin Cities area. Mostly we love the lake, the north woods, and the absence of crime. We’re very glad we made the move but I do see an area that needs improvement.
Many people in Two Harbors and the surrounding region do not support local business, to such an extent that it is often breathtaking. I know of some who would drive to Duluth for an oil change to save $5 rather than take their vehicle to one of our local mechanics.
I even see good friends of business owners not patronizing their friend’s establishments.
This year, as is usual, my first Christmas shopping trip was to Sweet Peas. Inside I found jewelry, wood crafts, handmade Christmas cards, hand knit sweaters and mittens, ornaments, and other items – all made by local artisans. I purchased all of my gifts for young children there as well. I believe that quality wood toys will mean much more than cheap plastic ones – often for less money. All of the Christmas cards I send will be hand made by a local artisan.
Lou’s Fish at the edge of town has been proclaimed a top pick for smoked fish by none other than Martha Stewart. I’m told Lou’s ships its products. Why send cheese, fruit cake, or sausage from elsewhere when you can send something made right on the shores of Lake Superior?
The Waterfront Gallery on First Avenue sells books and many gifts under $30 in addition to archival quality photographs. Pioneer Crafts on Highway 61 across from Grand Superior Lodge is an artist’s cooperative stocked with wares made by local craftsmen including pottery and handmade quilts. The Rustic Inn gift shop carries many interesting items, as well as T-shirts and sweat shirts. I haven’t visited the Oldest Sister, but it’s next on my list.
We live in one of the most beautiful places in the country; a place that vacationer’s flock to from all over. Why not send gifts to our distant friends and relatives that are from the North Shore? We need to support our community all year-round, and Christmas is a good time to start.
