We slipped into our archives to find some nuggets about deer hunts in the past on the North Shore. Some clips are from Lake County papers, others are from Duluth. The photos are all from northern Minnesota hunts and come courtesy of the Minnesota Historical Society.
One thing is for sure, the annual fall deer hunt has been a passionate endeavor for area residents for more than 100 years. So sit around the deer camp, nimrods*, and some tales of yesteryear.
* No offense, but that’s the old-fashioned term used for hunters by newspapers in the day. Once known for the great hunter Nimrod in legend, the term has taken on a different meaning over the years. Some say it was the influence of Bugs Bunny, who made fun of Elmer Fudd, a hunter himself, as in “here comes the great Nimrod.”
