The Mariners will play the Orr Braves tonight and will take on the Babbitt-Embarrass Knights Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Babbitt.
Last season the Knights prevailed in Silver Bay 44-6 as senior Jordan Goedderz ran for almost 300 yards, four touchdowns and a couple two-point conversions. Orr came into Silver Bay with a record of 2-4 while Babbitt stood at 1-5 after their first six games. Of the Mariner’s four losses so far this season, their opponents Cook and Nevis are 5-1, Mountain Iron-Buhl is 4-1 and Cherry is 4-2. Cody Larson is now ninth all-time in Mariner career receptions with 35 catches and 12th in receiving yards with 458. Luke Thun is 12th in career completions with 61.
Forty-seven Minnesota football teams entered week six unbeaten and 40 emerged unscathed. There are eight in nine-man, four in A, eight in AA, seven in AAA, five in AAAA, and eight in AAAAA. Virginia, in AAA, and Moose Lake-Willow River, in AA, are two of the four local teams remaining. The other two, McGregor and Littlefork/Big Falls, meet tonight at McGregor. These two have obviously emerged as the favorites in Section 5 and Section 7. Floodwood is McGregor’s top challenger with Cook challenging Littlefork.
Five volleyball teams remain unbeaten in Minnesota, with three of them in Class A and two in AA. The Section 7A volleyball picture appears to have Cherry and Cook County as the top teams in their subsections. Cherry is followed by Orr, Chisholm, and defending champion Deer River. Cook County is followed by AlBrook and Babbitt-Embarrass. Section 7AA has Hibbing as the three-time defending champion. Once-beaten Esko is the favorite to unseat them.
