The Mariner football team is off tonight due to Mesabi Academy canceling its season due to a lack of participants. It will give the Bay a chance to heal up and work on correcting some mistakes. I still see improvement in the team, especially on the offensive side of things where it’s getting more balanced. Last year they fell 60-0 to MIB at home and this year it was 43-6 on the road.
Last season the offense moved the ball very little and this year they’ve had almost 200 yards of offense. On defense, the youngsters continue to bite on the fakes and not hold their ground or position and create big plays for the opposing offense. The speedy MIB squad came into the Mariner game ranked third in the area in nine-man and 13th in the state.
At this point of the season (three games in out of eight), the St. Louis County Conference has two unbeaten teams in MIB and Littlefork-Big Falls. They are also the only unbeatens in Section 7. They, along with Orr and Cherry, are the favorites. In Section 5, Floodwood and McGregor remain unbeaten, and are the favorites along with once-beaten Cromwell. It already looks likely the Mariners and Hill City will meet in the section’s only quarterfinal contest, with the winner traveling to the top seed’s field.
