Students in middle school in Two Harbors will use some of their Fridays off this fall to work with older adults on a photography project. The program “Do You See What I See?” involves six middle school students and six senior citizens and will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 in the community room at Bayview Terrace. It will continue on Fridays through part of December.
Participants will be given a disposable camera and a brief orientation of the program. An adult and student will be paired up and each will be asked to take pictures of friends, activities, and things they like to do.
“We are hoping the students become more knowledgeable about adults and adults learn more about young people,” said Bunny Thomson, of Socially Active Seniors, who is putting on the program with the help of Co-op Light and Power’s Operation Round Up.
Participants will be allowed one week for picture taking and then they will be developed. They will then review the photos and choose their three favorites and discuss the people and activities the images reflect.
The group will then make entries into journals describing the images and reactions. A reception of the student and senior photo journals will be held at the end of the program.
Thomson said there are plans next year to have a Friday program focused on reading and writing, possibly following the same format.
There could also be a program with high school students and seniors talking about each other’s perceptions of one another some time in the future.
