A subcommittee to the Two Harbors City Council met last week to discuss the upkeep of Lakeview Cemetery. Council member Chris Swanson said “we really have a good start on the issues the cemetery is facing.”
Those issues include better communication with plot owners on what is allowed at gravesites as well as the general upkeep of the cemetery, including righting many fallen or leaning stones.
Public works director Tom Gelineau suggested the creation of a committee made up of community members to oversee fund-raising for improvements at the cemetery.
The meeting was spurred by complaints this summer about items moved from graves in order to do mowing at the cemetery. Caretakers of plots said the rules for what is allowed aren’t posted and poorly communicated to the public. There have also been lingering public safety concerns about leaning stones falling on cemetery visitors.
There were eight people at the meeting and Swanson said there are plans to invite representatives for war veterans and funeral homes when the subcommittee meets again this month.
“Now that we have identified all the big issues at the cemetery, we will be meeting on a consistent basis to make sure these things get addressed,” Swanson said.
