Bunny Thomson, of Socially Active Seniors, knows who the Lake County Outstanding Senior Volunteers are, but she’s not telling. “I’ll give you a hint,” Thompson said. “There’s two, a male and a female.” But beyond that, her lips are sealed.

They’ll be announced at Senior Day at opening day of the four-day Lake County Fair next Thursday. Seniors can get free gate passes and attend a free noon luncheon in the Commercial Building at the fairgrounds. Local musicians will provide entertainment and the volunteer awards will be announced.

The award recipients will advance to the state competition, sponsored by the Minnesota Board on Aging. Last year, Gene Cotton of Two Harbors was the state runner-up. Phyllis Boggie was also a state runner-up several years ago.

Thomson said this year’s winners are strong candidates. “They’ve both had many years of volunteer service.”

Community members nominate seniors for the award based on volunteer service after the age of 65. A committee of local people choose the winners. According to the Board on Aging’s Web site, it looks for “leadership, diversity of accomplishments, variety of volunteer services performed, quantity of accomplishments and quality of activities.”

Senior Day is a popular event at the fair. Last year, more than 120 people showed up. “We got a little short on food,” Thomson said.

Seniors need to call in advance this year to get tickets. They should contact Thomson at 830-0600.

The fair runs through Sunday with special events and entertainment each day.
