Agates and Tarballs: July 30We’re sticking a big Agate inside the birthday cake for Split Rock Lighthouse this week.
Happy birthday, lighthouse
We’re sticking a big Agate inside the birthday cake for Split Rock Lighthouse this week. It was 100 years ago Saturday when it first shot a beam across Lake Superior. If you haven’t already enjoyed the summer lineup of celebrations there, you won’t want to miss the lighting of the lamp at 8:30 Saturday followed by fireworks. Time to practice your night photography. It will be quite a sight. Who knows, maybe one of the tall ships visiting Duluth this week will make an appearance. That would be spectacular.
An Agate to Mayor Randy Bolen, who has declared Aug. 7 Florian Chmielewski Day in Two Harbors. The mayor has agreed to present the Chmielewskis with a commemorative document and introduce the group at the top of their show at the Thomas Owens bandshell that day. The concert is a fund-raiser for the Lake County Historical Society.
Getting it done
Well, the city refused, the Minnesota DNR refused, and the Army Corps of Engineers didn’t respond. So Vince Sando and his band of Sentence-To-Serve workers cut the weeds around the memorial benches near the breakwall on Agate Bay last week. Agates to all who helped make it happen. And a few days later? Three three women were enjoying coffee at one of the the tables.
