This fall, Friends of the Two Harbors Public Library is sponsoring a film series in the library’s meeting room. Films will be shown monthly on weekday evenings. They will be from and about a variety of non-Western cultures.
A pilot film for the series will be shown at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Set in the South Korea countryside, it deals with the relationship between an elderly grandmother and her spoiled grandson from the city, forced to spend a summer with her. The cultural rift between their traditional versus modernized lifestyles tests their mutual tolerance. The film has been called a testimony to unconditional love. It is family-friendly, though in Korean language with English subtitles.
Due to film licensing issues, the library is not allowed to use the title of the film in publicity. Most future films will include subtitles and will be appropriate for high school students and adults.
If the series is popular, it will carry on through the school year. More information is available at the library or by calling 834-3148.
All films will be free and bring your own popcorn. Informal discussions will follow the films as time allows.
