Northwoods Cafe of Silver Bay defeated the Leinies Legends 14-2 in six innings to win the 26th annual wooden bat softball tournament last weekend at Bob Gregg Field in Finland. Northwoods had to beat Leinies twice to win the title and they were up to the task.
Northwoods opened play Saturday with a victory over Two Stooges and got the rest of the day off. On Sunday morning they fell to Pike from Excelsior and were dropped down into the loser’s portion of the double elimination tourney, which meant a lot more games. After beating Isabella and Sandberg Construction of Cook they set up a rematch with Pike, who had fallen to Leinies in the unbeaten finals. A win over Pike made it three in a row and set up the title contest with Leinies where Northwoods made it five in a row to take first place. Pike took third, and Sanberg Construction was fourth in the 10 team tournament.
Football
Minnesota high school football teams now have the option of scheduling a game one week earlier then the first date traditionally allowed on a limited basis. Teams would be able to start practice a week earlier also, but would have to take a bye week from practice at some point later on.
Hockey
Kittson Central has been added to the Silver Bay boy’s high school hockey schedule to give it 24 games. The game would be on the afternoon of Dec. 4 at Rukavina Arena and would be the Mariner’s season opener.
