Bayside Chatter: Spring all-stars named

Three Mariners were named to the Section 7A All-Tournament Softball Team. They were senior Kirstin Sandstrom, junior Jessalyn Rowlee and sophomore Taylor Guzzo. Sandstrom was also named to the Duluth News-Tribune All-Area Softball Team.

Silver Bay has over 40 girls playing on four teams this summer. They have two 12-U teams, a 14-U team and a 16-U team. The girls are pitching from a distance of 43 feet this summer rather then the 40 feet they did for high school softball, as high school will go to 43 feet next season.

Hockey

So far around 110 kids have signed up for the Silver Bay hockey camp scheduled for the end of July. There are still a few spots left, but you need to contact the arena today.

A record 11 Americans were selected in the first round of the NHL entry draft, and 59 were selected overall. Three players from Minnesota, Derek Forbot of Duluth, Nick Bjugstad of Blaine and Brock Nelson of Warroad went in the first round. Forbot is the first Duluth native to ever go in round one.

Baseball

Following a World tournament in Thunder Bay, a junior team from Japan will travel to Silver Bay to play Silver Bay and a team from East Duluth on July 22. Junior baseball is for 13 and 14 year olds. Games are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.

Racing

Deven VanHouse won the Midwest Modified feature race at the Proctor Speedway June 20 and moved up to fourth place in the overall points standings.

Rocky Taconite

The powers that be in Silver Bay need to get together and have a barnstorming idea session if they ever want the Rocky Taconite Softball tournament to return. This will definitely need some out-of-the-box thinking, including looking at combining things for the same weekend.

Polar League

Six Silver Bay student- athletes received Polar League All-Conference Academic awards. Student-athletes in grades 10-12 that have a 3.75 cumulative GPA qualify. Mariners named were seniors Shane Loeffler and Kirstin Sandstrom, juniors Nikki Babbitt and Jessalyn Rowlee and sophomores Luke Thun and Katie Smedstad.
