The late 1940s were wonderful years to be a young boy, especially a boy growing up in the wilderness of northern Minnesota. In his latest book, Dennis Herschbach has captured the essence of his life between World War II and the Korean War.

“Brown Sugar Syrup and Jack Pine Sand” will be featured at the Two Harbors Public Library at 6:30 p.m. May 24. Herschbach will read excerpts from his book and provide background information to some of the stories. Following the reading, he will answer any questions readers might have. His book will be available for sale and signing.

Herschbach grew up next to the Mississippi River in Blackberry Township near Grand Rapids. In the 1940s and 1950s, when most of the country was absorbed in the post-war world of nuclear bombs and fast cars, Herschbach’s family lived with no indoor plumbing or electricity. The family picked berries in the summer, canned food for the winter, and hunted and fished for meat. The author’s stories of wandering the north woods with his bow and arrow and watching his parents struggle to eke out a life in this beautiful yet harsh environment tells the tale of a way of life that has disappeared.

“Brown Sugar Syrup and Jack Pine Sand “ will jog memories and provide a glimpse of the past for those too young to have been there.

The book is published by Red Step Press of Duluth. The release and program are made possible by the publisher and the Two Harbors Friends of the Library.
