Letter to the editor: State should value education

Some raise the spectre of having families pay for various services currently provided for Lake Superior School District students, including bus transportation, music and fine arts education, and athletics. Some calculate that a fee of nearly $1,000 a year for a rural family with, say, three kids in school is certainly not inconceivable.
Not only is the idea of fee-based education and transportation discriminatory to rural families, it also prevents students whose parents can’t pay from benefitting from a full education. No one should be receptive to the idea; it should be condemned.
Regarding the four-day school week, the school board is only considering it, and ballot options one and two include the preservation of the five-day week. Option three does not rule out the possibility. Vote for all three options if you favor a five-day week.
Minnesota used to value education. Since the state has markedly decreased funds to us, it’s up to us to help fund the education our kids deserve.
Do it for the kids.
