Silver Bay VFW Post 6204 and its Ladies Auxiliary have announced this year’s Voice of Democracy and Patriot Pens awards to four area students. Voice of Democracy, sponsored by the VFW, is open to students in grades 9-12. Patriot Pens, open to students in grades 6-8, is sponsored by the auxiliary. All winners received cash awards.

The Voice of Democracy theme was “Does America Still Have Heroes.” First place was given to junior Joshua Todd of Stony River Township. He went on to win the District 8 contest and placed fourth at state. Second went to ninth-grader Kyrie Todd, also of Stony River Township. Third place was given to senior Sonja Smerud of Beaver Bay Township.

The Patriot Pens theme was “When is the Right Time to Honor Our Military Heroes?” The winner was sixth-grader Sierra Nixon of Silver Bay.

Members of the Minnesota Patriot Guard, donated three Blu-Ray DVD players to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay last week.

Receiving the donations were administrator Carol Gilbertson, volunteer coordinator Ward Wallin and recreation director Colleen Wallin. Patriot Guard groups from Duluth and Hibbing have been making monthly trips to Silver Bay and assisting with bingo and other activities.
