Minnesota DNR conservation officer reports filed March 8:

Dan Thomasen (Two Harbors) reports that panfish have become the focus of inland anglers and getting around on the lakes is getting easier as the snow shrinks. Conversely, getting around for snowmobiles is getting tougher as the snow shrinks. The North Shore Trail is suffering from many bare corners and hillsides. The best of the riding is probably over with temps in the mid-40s projected for the week.

Kipp Duncan (Duluth) assisted with a snowmobile work detail north of Two Harbors. Fishing along the North Shore of Lake Superior from Duluth to Two Harbors was very busy over the weekend. Many fishermen were contacted. Several calls were handled during the week.

Randy Hanzal (Duluth) reports area panfish activity is increasing with the warmer weather. A fish house on wheels was reported stolen on Grand Lake over the weekend. A trap tampering case is being investigated. Several calls of injured animals were also dealt with.

*****

Keith Olson (Marine Unit) spent some time checking kamloop anglers along the North Shore. Warmer weather had many anglers out on the shore. Followed up on a ice shelter issue on the Duluth/Superior harbor. He worked a snowmobile detail. Officers concentrated on trail speed and careless operations in and around corners. The mild temps and heavy traffic had paid a toll on trail conditions by the afternoon.

*****

Matt Miller (Marine Unit) worked snowmobiles on the trails as the last snow of the season turned to runoff. Shore anglers were checked along Lake Superior. An angling work detail resulted in an arrest for DWI. Enforcement action taken for snowmobile and angling violations.

*****

Troy Ter Meer (Lake Superior) worked a snowmobile detail on North Shore State Trail while the trail conditions were still good for riding.
