Zach Erickson of American Engineering in Duluth tested the peeling paint on the Mallet steam engine for lead content Friday. He also did an assessment on the asbestos attached to the downtown Two Harbors landmark. The $1,500 assessment is just part of a long-term, $50,000 project to completely restore the surface of the train engine. The project would be similar to the one done in 2007 to the Three Spot engine just to the east on the grounds of the Lake County Historical Society Depot. The society is asking for funds from the community for the project. For information on funding and volunteering for the project, call the society at 834-4898.
