You ever panicked because you lost Fido?
Here’s a chance to squelch some of your fears: White Bear Technologies’ RoamEO pet location system.
The company, which has had a manufacturing and assembly facility at Two Harbors’ North Shore Business Enterprise Center since 2007, has been creating a global positioning system to track dogs. The animal wears a collar and its handler has a remote that offers directions and distance to the dog.
The RoamEO system consists of a portable, handheld receiver that displays information received from the GPS-enabled collar. The handheld device uses a LCD to show the location and direction of your pet. RoamEO updates readings every few seconds, giving the consumer a continuous stream of real-time information.
“We have a unique product,” said Brian Brown, director of sales for the company based in the Twin Cities area. He said the product is not only geared for the pet owner, but also the outdoors person and their hunting dogs.
There is a connection between the receiver and collar via a radio link. It has a limitation of between one and three miles.
So far, there’s nothing for small dogs or feline lovers. “We do get a lot of inquires about cats,” Brown said. The smallest collar adjustment is 12 inches in circumference, meaning the system is geared mostly for large dogs.
A pet owner can also get a device that will “fence,” meaning an alarm will sound on a receiver if a dog roams out of a set area.
In the future, the product RoamEO PeTnet will receive GPS location data from a RoamEO collar, which then displays a pet’s location on a Google Map.
Brown cited a few reasons the business has a facility in Two Harbors. “The excellent quality and reasonable cost of labor, the guidance of the Two Harbors Development Commission, support from Cooperative Light and Power Association and the flexibility and encouragement of our terrific landlord, Mike Valentine.”
As for business, Brown said they are hoping to expand to six employees in 2010.
Cheryl Elliott, production supervisor, said at the peak of production, nine employees worked there. In recent times, she said a few people had been laid off.
Items were back-ordered at one time. “Our biggest problem is keeping up with demand,” Brown said.
Other than just their Web site www.roameoforpets.com, they can also be found at other locations such as Cabela’s, Amazon.com,
RadioFence.com and Target.
