More than 120 people eventually shuffled down a lighted path and gathered around a bonfire Monday night near the Two Harbors Lighthouse to celebrate the winter solstice.
Gatherers were greeted by a sliver of moon, a calm Lake Superior, warm drinks, and a temperature in the 20s.
Ellen Moore Anderson, an organizer, told stories of some of the traditions built around the solstice across history.
Later, astronomers shared their wisdom of the night sky this time of year. Drummers drummed and singers sang.
It was the 12th annual celebration.
