For the 24th year Tuesday, the Split Rock Lighthouse beacon was turned on and a bell rang 29 times for the men lost in the sinking of the Great Lakes freighter Edmund Fitzgerald on Nov. 10, 1975. A 30th bell was rung for all seafarers lost on Lake Superior. About 516 people came to the historic lighthouse for the event – some gathering at the base of the lighthouse and others camped along shore for a good look and picture of the rarely lighted tower. Ed Maki read the names of each member of the lost Fitz crew while Winston Norby chimed the bell.
