After being in a slump at the end of the season, the Mariners volleyball squad kicked up its intensity in the first round of the playoffs to knock off Fond du Lac Ojibwe 3-0 Monday.
On Wednesday the Mariners (6-13) traveled to AlBrook (12-13) in second round action.
They lost 3-0. Kirstin Sandstrom had 10 kills and 14 digs and Katrina Davis added 10 set-assists and 12 digs.
The team was missing one starter with influenza-like illness.
Last week the Mariners fell to Cook County in five matches with Sandstrom contributing four ace serves, 11 kills and 17 digs. Jessica Solberg added two ace-serves and 10 kills in the losing cause.
Later in the week, the Mariners lost in another tight game to Babbitt-Embarrass 3-2. Sandstrom once again helped the team with 16 kills, six ace-serves and four blocks. Davis also helped the team’s efforts with five ace-serves, 21 set assists and 16 digs. Solberg also contributed with 16 digs and three blocks.
Cook County is ranked No. 1 in the playoffs, while Babbitt is No. 3.
“The last three games, we’ve really just picked it up,” said head coach Andrea McMillen. “They’re tired of losing.”
