On a recent Friday afternoon, Mary Jo Taintor’s first grade class took a trip to Lax Lake.

The students put into practice the fishing techniques that they learned with Kelley Elementary’s new fishing equipment. The fishing rods and tackle were awarded to the school by the MinnAqua – Pay it Forward Program last spring. Before heading to the lake, the class studied how to be safe on a dock, how to identify different species of fish, and how to properly use a fishing rod and reel. To incorporate math and science, the first graders recorded specific information on graphs and charts. They included information such as, what worked better - using bobbers or not using bobbers; standing up or sitting down; using worms, minnows or leeches; and what kinds of fish were most caught.
