Northern Lights: Oct. 3- On-going events

A summary of upcoming events in the area.

Oct. 3

United Way of Greater Duluth is expanding its support of Imagination Library in our area. The kick-off event is planned from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Two Harbors Super One store. Imagination Library registration/sign ups will be encouraged. Treats will be served and the special guest will be Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Walking by Water, a family event designed to promote healthy living, presented by Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors, will begin at 9 a.m. at the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. The walk will be on the section of the trail connecting Split Rock. Registration is $10; all participants receive a long sleeved t-shirt, medallion, LEXAN water bottle and post-walk food. Oct. 4

The annual Harvest Moon Festival will be held at the Two Harbors breakwater beginning at 6:25 p.m. and 15 minutes later the sun sets. The best place to see the event is about halfway down the breakwater. Bring your cameras, lawn chairs and the whole family down to the breakwater to join in the festivities. The live music will be provided by local pianist Tracy Williams.

The October full moon is known as the Hunter’s Moon, so this program will focus on predators and their prey. Learn how to identify nocturnal hunters — especially birds and mammals that hunt in the fall and winter season — and the complexities involved in finding their food at night from 6:30 -7:30 p.m. at Lady Slipper Lodge at Gooseberry Falls State Park (program is free but a vehicle permit is required). Oct. 5

The Lake County Historical Society will have its annual membership dinner at 6 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The keynote speaker will be Larry Killien from the Department of Natural Resources, Two Harbors Safe Harbor/Marina and Waterfront committees. RSVP to 834-4898.

Class of ’58, will be meeting for a luncheon at Emily’s in Knife River at noon.

Oct. 6

The Autism Association of Northern Minnesota will meet from 6:30- 8 p.m. at Kenwood Edison Charter School in Duluth. For more information, call (218) 624-4945.

Oct. 7

The Homesteaders will meet at 12:30 p.m. at the Duluth Town Hall on Homestead Road for its annual Harvest Potluck. Clifton Fire Chief Bob Engelson will give a talk on home fire safety. Flu shots will be available. For more, call (218) 525-4154.

Class of ’44, will be getting together for a potluck lunch at noon. Come join us at the home of Bob and Alen.

Oct. 9

October 4-10 is National 4-H Week, and Lake County is celebrating with a 4-H open house from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Two Harbors Public Library. To learn how to become a 4-H member or volunteer leader in Lake County, call (218) 834-8379 or call the Lakers 4-H Club at 834-4405.

Ryan Gale author of “The Great Northwest Fur Trade” will speak on Friday, October 9th, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Silver Bay Public Library. Everyone welcome.

On-going events

The North Shore Photo Club in Two Harbors is exhibiting photographic artwork at the Vanilla Bean. The exhibit will run through Oct. 25. The theme for this exhibit is “Macro Photography,” and will include works from at least five members of the club. The club meets on the first Thursday of each month in the basement of the Emanuel Lutheran Church.

Caregiver Sharing Group meets the second Wednesday of every month, 1-2:30 p.m. at the United Protestant Church, Silver Bay. This group is run through Northshore Area Partners, a nonprofit living at home/block program working with elders to keep them in their homes.

Harbor Center, 111 Waterfront Drive, Two Harbors is an adult drop-in center providing coffee and activities plus. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 12:30-4:30 p.m. with a monthly meeting on the third Monday at 1 p.m.

Family Caregiver Sharing Group meets every second Thursday from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Lake View Memorial Hospital in the lower level meeting room. Call Linda Kinnunen at Community Partners, 834-8024.
