The Petrell Hall Centennial Committee is having its annual Labor Day weekend pancake breakfast fund-raiser and program on Sunday, Sept. 6. Pancakes will be served from 8-11 a.m. in Brimson.

This year’s fund-raiser for Petrell Hall’s centennial celebration in 2012 includes a silent auction, bake sale, and raffle of a beautiful autumn pattern hand-quilted quilt, a complete Granite Gear Stratus Latitude back pack, and a $100 gas card. The program begins at 11 a.m. with a special dedication in loving memory of Astrid (Petrell) Kolehmainen, the youngest daughter of Edwin and Olga Petrell who provided the land upon which Petrell Hall was built in 1912.

The remainder of the program focuses on the cooperative stores and organizations created by the Finnish labor movement in the Upper Great Lakes Region during the early 20th Century. Richard Hudelson, professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, will speak on “Co-ops for the Workers.” He will present the history and philosophy of the cooperative movement and the Finns involvement, including historical images.

Professor Hudelson is the author of five books on the history and philosophy of the labor movement. He has presented papers and talks on the labor history of the Western Lake Superior Region to academic and general audiences in the United States, Finland, Sweden, and Ireland. His most recent book (with co-author, Carl Ross) is “By the Ore Docks: A Working People’s History of Duluth.”
