Plans to memorialize the fallen Honking Tree will be revealed soon, according to Two Harbors Mayor, Randy Bolen.
The plans include a monument carved by a chainsaw artist and medallions created from the tree’s branches. The medallions will be sold throughout the community.
Bolen said a conceptual design was in works for the chainsaw carving.
Bolen said about $400 had been donated to preserve the remains of the tree.
He said negotiations were underway to secure a site for the memorial. The Two Harbors City Council and MnDOT will hold a brief ceremony in coming weeks to transfer the title of ownership of the tree from MnDOT to the city.
The tree, which was a symbolic welcome to the North Shore for visitors and locals, was cut down by vandals in April.
