Letter to the editor: Favre was great in New York

Matt, nice article. I’ve got to tell you, my friends and I (Jets season ticket holders mostly) here in New York were blown away by Brett Favre’s play last year (that is the first 11 games before his injury).

Matt, nice article. I’ve got to tell you, my friends and I (Jets season ticket holders mostly) here in New York were blown away by Brett Favre’s play last year (that is the first 11 games before his injury).

He had to learn a new system, come to NYC, throw to a mediocre receiving corps (at best) and he simply took over the team in the most positive way, by his example, temperament and passion. We saw greatness last year Matt.

He threw balls the quality of which none of us had ever seen. We’ve all seen Joe Montana, John Elway et al and I previously thought Montana was the best quarterback ever. But seeing Favre every week, every series totally changed my view of that. He was capable of engineering drives almost at will, had a record-setting 70 percent three games in a row, but most importantly he totally lit up the other players. His presence and intensity inspired the other players to play in zones they’d never been in before. It was just a chemistry thing and quite amazing. If Eli Manning (the highest paid player in NFL now) had been Jets quarterback those 11 games they might have won 4-5. Favre was that much of an impact.

As far as the Vikes are concerned, I think there’s a very good chance Brett will be in Minnesota, say – mid-October. He’s said, through his agent, he’d be interested in that and that the way Roger Clemens did it the past few years was attractive to him. But I think, at that time both the owner and general manager of Vikes should completely push ego out of the way and tell Brett, in no uncertain terms, that they really want him badly. I know some folks who know Brett and he’s very sensitive, very human in that way (which is one of the reasons he’s great) and wants to feel wanted, and that has an effect on his playing decisions.

If Brett comes to the Vikes, I’m a Vikings fan period. There’s nobody like this guy and “they don’t make ’em like that anymore!”
